Go4Go.net upgrade - problem tracking thread

This thread is to keep track of problems our users may experience during Go4Go's transition to a new system. Please feel free to report any problem here and I will try to fix them as quickly as possible.

User account transition

It would be a lot of work to move 10000+ user accounts from the old site. I had some technical difficulties because the new content management system stores password differently, which means I had to write programs to convert the user passwords. Many of the accounts are dormant any way; and some accounts have apparently been created by spammers (yes they hire people from poor countries to create accounts manually just to post a few spam links, what a world).

For these reasons, I chose not to migrate the entire user database. Only accounts in the following categories have been moved: those who logged in to the old Go4Go site at least once during the past 12 months; those who have made at least one post in the past; those very early adopter of Go4Go (many of them have actively supported us). If you are unfortunately not in the above categories, registering a free and new account takes less than a minute (and be quick while your favorite usernames are still available).

The those whose accounts have been migrated, I decided to drop a few fields (such as user signatures). The reason is, again, spammers tend to put web links in their signatures which point to sites having nothing to do with Go. I hope our genuine Go fans would understand this situation.

Forum access and its future

Because of an incorrect user permission setting the forum has been accessible by the admin users only for the past two days. This has now been fixed.

I have left a few hundreds forum posts at the old site. The migration appears to be difficulty because the system in use now is very different from the old one. I will try to save the most valuable posts (in particular those with technical discussions) at a later time.
