Chinese Changqi Cup

Overview:

Changqi Cup (倡棋杯中国围棋职业锦标赛) is a major Chinese domestic Go tournament sponsored by the Ing family and its Go foundation. The tournament is smartly named: changqi(倡棋) literally means 'promoting Go'; it is also the Chinese pinyin of the given name of Ing Chang-Ki, the millionaire businessman who spent his lifetime promoting Go. Ing Chang-Ki passed away in 1997. In memory of him, his family created this tournament in 2004. Each year, the main tournament often starts on his birthday 23rd of October.

Tournament Format:

The main tournament is in a knock-out format. Each year there are 30 players. Previous year's winner and runner-up are directly seeded into the 2nd round. Due to the Ing family's connection to Taiwan, a seat is always reserved for a top Taiwanese player.

Prize Money:
Winner: 450,000 CNY; runner-up: 150,000 CNY.
Time System:
For games using Ing rule, each side has 3.5 hours reserved time. When that runs out, there is a special system allowing players to buy 30 minutes of extra time at a price of 2 points. Players can spend a maximum of 6 points for extra time. Players do frequently take advantage of this system (6-point penalty can be a small price to pay if one can find a way killing a big dragon). As a result, official game results reported in media often differ from the actual on-board situations (unfortunately there is no official way to record such discrepancy in SGF specification). Games in early-stage preliminary tournaments are shorter with 2 hours reserved time and normal byoyomi.
Ruleset and Komi:
This is one of the few major professional tournaments adopting Ing Rules. The komi is 8 and black side wins ties (which is practically equivalent to a komi of 7.5 points). The open preliminary tournament (introduced from term 12) use normal Chinese rule.
Key Players, Events and Statistics:

Gu Li and Kong Jie both won the title twice.
